These lights were often said to be malevolent beings, who misled travellers and steered horses into ponds. The Norfolk Lantern Man was said to attack people carrying lanterns, and could be invoked by insulting him or expressing disbelief in his existence, or by whistling at night. The only way to escape him was to lay face down in the mud so he'd pass over your body without stopping.
