The bed was also said to be haunted, possibly by the ghost of its maker Jonas Fosbrooke, as those who tried to sleep in it were pinched and scratched all night long. Of course this could have been the result of trying to get fifteen people into one bed! One story associated with the haunting is that to choose between the suitors of a millers daughter, King Henry VIII promised her hand to whoever would spend the night in the bed. His Master of the Horse was the winner, although he was covered in bruises the following morning. Since Henry ruled 1509–1547, the story would have happened some time before the "real" date of 1590 when the bed was said to have been made.
